AN OLDHAM woman has issued a warning after being cheated out of more than £20,000 in a scam involving a professional fraudster on one of America's 'most wanted' lists.
Kathryn North was targeted by two career crooks who convinced her they could help rebuild her life after her husband died in November, 2000.
The 56-year-old first linked up with the conwomen after travelling to the USA. She had met a man on the trip who was married but claimed that he was planning to leave his wife.
Kathryn, from Royton, had always had a keen interest in astrology, so, on her return, she turned to the 'net' for answers.
In January, 2004, she visited the site www.keen.co.uk, which offers psychic readings.
The site put her in touch with Celine Winters, apparently based in Virginia, USA, who promised to help her fulfil her dream of getting over her husband's death and achieving a happy life with a new partner.
At a low ebb, Kathryn was ready to latch on to anything.
She said: "I spoke to Celine on the phone and within minutes she had me. I must have spent between £500 and £600 on phone calls in the first week alone.
"She told me there was so much evil in my life to be cleansed. I had to call her at certain times each day - it got to where I wouldn't sneeze unless she said it was okay."
Then Celine began to ask for money - £450 at first to buy candles, oils and crystals.
Kathryn said: "I would also have to go and bury items in the garden and it would have to be done at certain times.
"She told me I would have to buy a tabernacle and that if I didn't I would get very sick, never have a relationship with anyone again and be on my own for the rest of my life.
"She also told me that Geoff, my dead husband, was angry and holding me back from having a relationship, and I had to wash some of his clothes in water.
"I had to buy a tabernacle for £10,500, but I never saw it, I just sent the money.
"When I questioned her, her business partner Peaches Marks did a hard-sell and said that if I didn't do what they said I would be sorry."
Kathryn even travelled to Virginia to meet Celine, and was conned into handing over $19,000 to buy a Greek pyramid.
When she got back to England she was told the married American man would call her - but he never did.
She said: "They said that he hadn't rung because they had completely cleansed me of all male energy. To get around this I had to be around men, so I took a job in a pub."
While doing this she had a number of relationships on the instructions of Celine. Finally, in September last year, Kathryn saw the light.
She said: "It dawned on me that I had wasted three years and not got anything back."
When challenged, Celine became very aggressive and broke off all contact.
Kathryn said: "I really want to warn other people. It is like a cruel joke - I feel really isolated and many of my friends are no longer in touch."
The Advertiser has discovered that Peaches Marks has a history of carrying out similar scams. She is known to have worked with accomplices, and it appears that Celine Winters is likely to be the false identity of one of them.
Authorities believe Marks may have earned up to $1 million from scams and her picture is on a list of most wanted criminals in Virginia, with a recordincluding grand larceny.
Kathryn said: "I'll do anything to get them. It would be wonderful to know that they can't do this to anybody else."
